Patent Medicines -- During the 1800s and early 1900s a number of companies marketed cure alls in the form of pills, lotions and ointments. These Patent Medicines were said to cure impotence, restore hair, make you strong an healthy. For the most part these cures did not work and were likely dangerous or at best placebos. A cynic might say that there is a parallel between today's health food industry and some of the more audacious claims made by these patent medicines.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome &Amplified Pain: New Evidence
Research Brief
A new studyprovides the first scientific evidence of something many people with chronic fatigue syndromehave dealt with for years -- hyperalgesia, which is pain amplification similar to that of fibromyalgia.
In hyperalgesia, the body and brain have an abnormal response to pain, taking pain signals and essentially turning up the volume. It's not a mental or emotional weakness or inability to deal with pain -- it's a physiological response that can be seen on certain types of brain scans. People with hyperalgesia experience more pain than other people would from the same stimuli.
Researchers looked for a heightened pain response both in places where people said they hurt and in other places around the body. They found hyperalgesia all over, meaning it's generalized hyperalgesia.
It's surprising that this symptom hasn't been researched before, especially since hyperalgesia can be associated with proinflammatory cytokines, which are a known feature of chronic fatigue syndrome. Because hyperalgesia is a neurological symptom, this finding shores up evidence that chronic fatigue syndrome is a neuroimmune condition.
