This advertisement warned the public to be on guard against substandard imitations and counterfeits of the Comstock patent medicines. Given that the original patent medicines would probably kill you if used correctly, one has to wonder how much worse it would have been to take these counterfeits. It is a testament to the success of the Comstock patent medicines such as Indian Root Pills that unscrupulous competitors were apparently willing to try to rip them off by passing their products off as the original. Then again the company may have been the author of the controversy. By alleging that others were trying to steal their amazing products it created the impression that the Comstock patent medicines were really beneficial and valuable, otherwise why would anyone go the trouble of stealing their trade secrets.
